Passenger
We are starting shooting September end and probably you will see this in your theaters on Christmas.
I think I am going to make a significant movie. I know I am completely ready to do it.
Meanwhile Aamir was shot in Arri 235 and ultra primes. And they used 40% steadycam on a 3.5 kg camera.Thats too much.Malayalam cinema certainly cant afford that.
I want to go with Arri3 and HAWK for passenger.Someone told me HAWK is not compatible with Arri3.Pritvi told me thats nonsense and he has worked on couple on movies with it.Maybe we will be needing 24 block lenses for a couple of days shoot.
Well thats all you need for a malayalam cinema I feel. Its the content that matters.
I realise the easiest thing that can happen to a film maker during the making of a movie is to lose his conviction in between.
I pray this does not happen with me.There are going to be difficult days, desperate decisions, finaicial limitations. And between all this chaos i have to make a movie.
I am mentally preparing myself for it.I realise there maybe times i am just going through the motions but this this should not reflect on screen.
All I can say about passenger now is that its a thriller with a social committement.
Wish me luck guys.

The Shawshank Redemption
What makes it special?Well you have to experience that for yourself.
Whenever I feel dejected, demotivated,on an extreme low, I try to remember this movie.
The greatest movie made on hope, belief and optimisim.
Miss it..well you are missing something special people.

Aamir
Saturday was busy visiting banks for some finances.I was driving back and suddenly saw this poster on the street. Aamir was playing one afternoon show in Sridhar.
Smitha and Tara was with me in the car.I knew it wont be a movie to their liking. I wouldn’t have risked taking them to the movie if it was another day.But then it was a special day.
Sreenivasan had just called me informing finally we have a producer.Finances were no longer required. This is going to happen finally.
That relief made me take the risk of taking them to the theater.
The movie unfortunately wasn’t anything special.I cant say for sure coz I could not concentrate fully as mind was full of thoughts.
Still it is an interesting movie. The climax was special.
Once again I loved the camera work.I have been communicating with Alphonse Roy for a while through email but never knew his debut movie can prove such good results.
I believe they shot in Arri 435 and HAWK lenses.I loved the hand held shots.Importantly they were not causing disturbance to the eye.I wonder why we never use handheld shots in Malayalam movies more often. It could be quite poetic reflecting the mind of a character if used properly.
Check out Aamir. Its a movie that deserves your 50 Rupee ticket if you are a lover of different cinema.

Katrathu Tamil
Is this a great movie,I don’t know.
Does this promote good message,I don’t think so.
Can you call the maker a fake?Certainly NOT. I felt he has made something he completely believes in.
I was so inspired by this movie that I wanted to write this.I was insipired by this simple fact that at a very nearby place called tamil nadu young film makers attempts movies like this.A young star like Jeeva devoted one year of his career for a movie like this.Isnt that wonderful?I feel enormously jealous.
I live in a nearby state which I feel is producing the worst commercial films oflate in India. And people here has no option but to watch it.
A difference has to happen.Someone has to take an initiative risking everything.
Try this movie if you find time.I am bowled over by the camera work.I wish SR kathir works with me on my movie.I wish to talk to him and realise it was shot the way I think it is..
Less lights,less unit,less money.
But pure belief and passion.

My Dear Tara
Tara stood up from the new bed and asked me. I was in my bedroom lying lazily in another bed and watching “The holiday”.Tarun was sleeping near me and Smitha was with Tara in the other bed.
That question had so much innocence that it touched even me. Well that does not mean that I am inhuman or stone hearted, just a bit distracted maybe.Thats all.
Tara repeated the question again.I quietly took my eye off “The Holiday” and went near her.She repeated the question for the third time and dragged me to bed. We lied there for quite a while. She held on to me tight, kissed me couple of times and slowly slept.
The Holiday was still playing but I could not go back to it.I was feeling a strange sense of fulfillment. There was happiness.
The new bed was bought since we wanted Tara to sleep with us.After Tarun arrived and since Tara was a very “demanding spacious” kid in her sleep our first bed was not enough to accommodate us all comfortably.Tara was sleeping with her grand parents for a while.
Bed was a small commodity but it seemed to give Tara more joy than many other things we bought recently.
Its wonderful to have a family.

Living in TODAY
I read an article recently about the internet intellectuals and the problems they are creating. Maybe true. But I find this an amazing medium. This is real revolution. This can change the world,if it already hasn’t.
Has it reduced the importance of print? Not for people like me. I was always a bad selective reader.Dont get me wrong here. Its not someone who reads selected works but who is highly impatient and rushes through a work. You never get the joy of reading like that. I am realizing this recently as I have seriously started reading some wonderful works. Its beautiful world indeed, was a crime deliberately missing it for all this while.
Still internet is special, isn’t it? I am in love with it and probably cant live without it. Actually no medium replaces the other. Look at the way Radio has bounced back oflate. All these debates like television affecting movies, internet replacing print etc sound illogical to me.
I wish theater comes back. I was never really into theater. Has hardly watched any plays. But I think it’s a great medium and should not be in such dire straits as our traditional art forms. And yes what about them? What about our chakyar kuthu and kathakali? Are they not affected by these new mediums?
I think the key is to change with times. Now how can a Kathakali change with time? It definitely can. Cant we think of more contemporary themes?stories?Cant we think of an amalgamation of all these forms and present an altogether modern version communicating with the people of today? That’s again debatable. Does a great art form need to change with times? I feel it should if it is for the people.
I feel people are willing to spend these days. They do not want to sit at home on weedends bored infront of television. They want to go out. Give them something which will help them go out and spend for you.
I wish there was better television. It cannot survive being as commercialized as these days. There should be some space left for quality and substance. I used to watch malgudi days, nukkad, tapas etc as a kid. What is a kid of today watching? Betrayals, murders, hate, cheap humour..Dont they deserve anything better? What about our cinema? Dont we deserve better cinema?
Lots of question marks..How can i make my world little more beautiful and meaningful?..Browse some interesting sites, read good books, sustain a compassionate heart, watch inspiring movies, keep hope, keep dreaming and continue working towards it..
Can one man make a difference?I believe YES.Maybe in his own small ways...But how fulfilling that can be compared to our selfish and self centered selves...

2008
Watched 2 movies infact. Before Sunrise and Before sunset.Actually one is the sequel to the first.2 amazing movies. They took nine years to make the sequel. The took nine years because they wanted it to be original. Before sunrise is about 2 strangers meeting on a train and the one night they spend together in Vienna. Before Sunset is about what happens when they meet after 9 years. So to make them look real the makers waited for nine years!!Thats what I call pure passion. Its not only about the characters getting older without the help of makeup. The writers perspective changes in 9 years with the characters.Same for director and the whole crew. They are planning the 3rd part in 2014 I hear.I am dying to watch it.
2007 was a significant year for me I guess. It was an year for learning cinema and getting exposed to good cinema from across the globe.I would like to believe the time was all worth it.
2008 could well be the most important year of my life. This is the year in which I am going to make my first movie. It could have happened 5 years before but again all happens for good.My perspective towards life and cinema has positively changed in these 5 years.I feel I am ready for it now.
I want to welcome 2009 differently. Probably in a crowd and having reasons to celebrate.
